Depending on the species the body length of hake is from 30 cm to 1.5 m. Colour usually silvery grey with back. Lower jaw longer than upper. From other genera of the family of checovich different structure of the caudal fin that is separated from dorsal and anal and the second dorsal and anal fins of approximately equal height.

Although hake are mostly bottom fish, but their prey rise in the intermediate and upper layers of the water. Feed primarily on fish including its own young. Some species make seasonal migrations. Sexual maturity is usually reached in 3-4 years. Spawning in most species extended into the summer months, the eggs are pelagic. Live hake to a maximum of 20 years. Females grow faster than males and reach larger sizes.
